The City of Hammond, Louisiana is located in the Tangipahoa Parish and named for Peter Hammond, a Swedish immigrant who first settled the area in 1818. In 1854, the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad (now known as the Illinois Central Railroad) arrived in Hammond, making it a commercial and transport center. Hammond real estate became a shoemaking center for the Confederacy during the Civil War and later became a major shipping center for strawberries, earning the nickname "the Strawberry Capital of America". After the Civil War, light industry and commercial activities became the city's bread and butter. By the end of the 19th century, Hammond real estate became a road stop for northerners traveling south and for New Orleanians traveling north. Hammond was also the location for the filming of the TV series "In the Heat of the Night" (1988-1994) and the movies "Ray" (2004) and "Glory Road" (2006).
